World Heritage Sites ?

Good to learn that some progress is being made towards World Heritage status for three industrial sites in South Africa.

  • in Mpumalanga, works proceeds on the Pilgrim’s Rest nomination (gold mining);
  • in the Northern Cape work is in under way on the nomination of the Big Hole, at Kimberley (diamond mining)
  • and again in the Northern Cape, there is the possible inclusion of the area around O’kiep (copper mining) in a serial nomination with the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape, together with similar sites in Australia and Mexico.
